Car Rental in Costa Rica
Car Rental in Costa Rica is pretty easy. We have used several agencies and haven’t had a problem. If you do not plan to leave the city of San Jose you will not need a car in my opinion. The taxies are good and inexpensive. You have the major companies such as Budget, Dollar, National, Avis and Alamo to name a few. You also have local rentals as well. We will tell you about the ones that we have experience with and recommend what we know. You will have to get liability insurance which is required by law in Costa Rica. This is about $7 - $20 depending on the vehicle. You will need this regardless of your coverage by your credit card. You will also have an option for Collision Damage Waver or CDW. This is optional and we have never taken this option as our credit card coverage was good enough for us. But this is a decision you will have to make.
Taxies in Costa Rica
The main point to remember when using a taxi is to have the hotel hail your cab or make sure you get into a red cab with the yellow marker shaped like a triangle or upside down diamond. Also make sure the driver turns on the meter before you start your trip. Most of the drivers are honest hard workers but you will have a few out to make an extra dollar. If you use a taxi without the yellow marker it may be a pirate operator, some of these are ok and actually cheaper but some are not very nice people. You are better off to ALWAYS use a registered taxi.
