What you need for successful Costa Rica Weddings
For Costa Rica Weddings, if you’re not having a Catholic wedding the ceremony will require a lawyer. Your lawyer will be able to assist you with the legal paperwork and filings.
Paperwork
Valid passport - Remember your passport must be valid for at least six months.Birth certificateCertificate of single status Police recordFull name without initialsJob description – Your job title such as contractor, manager or teacherCurrent address, Full name of true parents and their nationality, Mailing address (this is where your certificates will be sent) Contact details which should include email address and phone numbers.
Witnesses
You will need two witnesses. Your witness can not be your immediate family. It would be best to have two friends for this. Sometimes the lawyer performing the ceremony or your wedding coordinator / planner will be able to provide two witnesses
If you have been divorced
You will need copies of the divorce decrees. If you have been divorced more than once you will need the paperwork from each one. You will also need to provide a sworn statement for this as well. Again I would bring copies of all the decrees. One note on divorces for Costa Rica is that the woman must be divorced for at least 300 days. If it has been less than 300 days the woman must undergo two different pregnancy tests by two different doctors. This must be certified for negative results. The certificates must be translated by an official translator and then notarized. The 300 day waiting period also applies if the woman’s husband has died. These conditions do not apply to men.
When will you get your certificate?
Once you’re married how long does it take to get all the official documents? If everything goes well about three months to get the certificate. Your lawyer will make sure your paperwork is presented to the Costa Rican Civil Registry and your Embassy. Once this has been completed they can mail you the paperwork. Costa Rican marriages are recognized all over the world. You will need to have the certificate authenticated by your own countries consulate or city of residence.
